Folklore Registration and Practice Begins Thursday, Aug. 20

By | Folklore Groups, General Information/News | No Comments

Folklore registration and the first practice of the 2015-2016 season will take place Thursday, August 20 beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the South Wing of St. Sava Church.

If your child has been thinking about joining/returning to Folklore, this is a perfect time. We will have a lot of new faces this season and will be working together to form new groups. We have a lot of fun activities planned for this season and the more members we have, the better!

  • 6:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. – Registration
  • 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Pee Wee Practice
  • 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. – Middle Group Practice

At this point, it is undetermined if we will have a Senior Group. We will not know until registration and we see who commits. We are asking our older kids to please come out and join!

Due to work schedules and sports practice of some of our dancers, we decided to modify the practice schedule a bit. Please let me know if this does now work for you and we will see what we can do.

New blouses have been purchased for the girls and will be distributed by the end of the month.

Please complete the registration form and return with your payment on Thursday, August 20th.

Thank you all for your continuing support and we look forward to seeing you all at practice next week!

Board Appointments

The Folklore Groups would also like to welcome Lela Jensen to the Folklore Board and announce that Dawn Sisk will remain on the board as well.

Parent Support and Volunteers

We will be asking for help throughout the season, hoping that some of the parents can take the lead on luncheons and other special fundraising events.  If we all share the responsibility then not one person or group will burn out so quickly.

Biljana Vrbica and Ursula Brboric are volunteers leading the plan/organize/work scheduling for the luncheon after Divine Liturgy taking place Sunday, September 20. If you would like to help at this event, please send email to bvrbica29@gmail.com. Please let us know as soon as possible, preferably by August 20, if you will be able to help with this luncheon.  All proceeds will go to Folklore.

St. Sava Serb Fest 2015 Preview: Experience a Culture of Music & Dance

By | Children's Choir, Folklore Groups, General Information/News, Serb Fest | No Comments

3 Days, 16 Acts, more than 48 Hours of Live Performances – it’s part of the core of what Serb Fest is all about – music, singing, and dancing. From the contemporary sounds of the modern DJ to the traditional tones of the plucked tamburica, you’ll experience a dynamic range of cultural music and dance at St. Sava Serb Fest 2015.

In addition to all of the amazing food and baked goods at St. Sava Serb Fest, our musical and entertainment offerings are a critical part of the cultural experience. Let’s face it, we love to sing and dance!

Check out the complete daily schedule at https://www.saintsava.net/serb-fest/ to see who is playing and when each day of the fest.

With musical acts playing simultaneously throughout nearly all of the fest, you’ll never know exactly where a Kolo dance may spontaneously begin. One thing is certain, you’ll know it when it happens and you’ll probably want to join in the fun!

About the Kolo

The Kolo is danced primarily by people from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Bela Krajina region of Slovenia. It is performed among groups of people holding each other’s hands or having their hands around each other’s waists (ideally in a circle, hence the name).

The basic steps are easy to learn, but experienced dancers dance Kolo with great virtuosity due to different ornamental elements they add, such as syncopated steps. Each region has at least one unique kolo; it is difficult to master the dance and even most experienced dancers cannot master all of them.

The dance is accompanied by instrumental two-beat music (bearing the same name), performed most often with an accordion, but also with other instruments: frula (traditional kind of a recorder), tamburica, or šargija.

Many variations of Kolo are normally performed at weddings, social, cultural, and religious ceremonies. Kolo may be performed in a closed circle, a single chain or in two parallel lines. Both men and women dance together, however some dances require only men to dance and some dances are only for women.

The music is generally fast paced and contains tricky steps.  Kolo costumes vary from region to region, but Bosnian and Serbian dance costumes typically are the most similar to each other. Men wear a cap, loose blouse tucked in to trousers that balloon around the thighs and then tightening from the knee down to the ankle.

Women wear long white embroidered dresses with very heavy velvet aprons tied at the waist. Both the dress and apron are embroidered with bright flowers to enhance the females outfit. Generally, both men and women wear embroidered velvet vests. One of the most interesting components of the kolo costume are the shoes. The shoes are called Opanci which are made from cured pig skin that is molded to fit the dancers foot.

St. Sava Children’s Folklore Group and Children’s Choir

St. Sava has a children’s Folklore group who will be performing Saturday and again on Sunday. The kids will be in their traditional costumes.  After the dance performance, our St. Sava Children’s Choir will take the stage to entertain us with several beautiful songs.

Visit https://www.saintsava.net/serb-fest/ to see the exact times the children’s folklore group and choir will be taking the stage.

The children will also perform a mock Serbian wedding. Be sure to stop by our museum over the weekend to check out the wonderful display “Serbian Weddings” open to the public throughout the fest.

Intercultural Dance Fest Draws Over 400 People

By | Folklore Groups | No Comments

chi-ugc-ugc-relatedphoto-intercultural-dance-fest-draws-over-400-peopl-2015-05-04The Srbadija Serbian Folk Dance Troupe of St. Sava hosted their first Intercultural Dance Festival Saturday, May 2, 2015. The event took place at their new social center in Merrillville and drew over 400 people.

With groups representing the different regions of Serbia, they were joined by dance troupes that also represented Mexico, Greece, Ireland, and India. Several of the Serbian troupes traveled from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Canada. Children and young people ranging in age from 4-20 something represented the dancers and provided an opportunity for them to get acquainted with the art of dancing and music from other cultures.

The Srbadija Dance Troupe served spit roasted lamb, pig, and cevapcici–traditional Serbian foods and featured a bake sale that also included delicacies from Serbia.

The program was followed by music and dancing.
“We are delighted to have hosted such an event and our dance troupe president Karen Knezic, the parents and children worked hard to make this event happen,” said Reverend Marko Matic from St. Sava. “Bringing together the various cultures to share their heritage and art of dance with our community and our young kids was the intent–everyone loved it,” added Knezic.
